The surf
A chain of reefs on the equator, facing every direction, with our own boat to reach whichever side is working. Everything on this page is scored for women who love smaller, playful waves: clean, light wind, not too big. A big day scores low here, on purpose.

Live · ECMWF via Windy
Primary swell height and direction, live from the ECMWF wave model. The Telos sit in the path of Indian Ocean groundswell from the south-west, and with reefs facing every direction there is usually somewhere sheltered to surf.
The season
Why April and May, and not later
Every day since late 2021, scored by the same function as the forecast above. Bars are the share of days that suit smaller-wave surfers; the coral wedge on top is the share that are ideal. The Indian Ocean’s big season runs June to September — great for chargers, too much for this crew.
April and May sit just before the size picks up: roughly one day in seven is on the big side, against more than half of all days in July and August. Which week within them matters more than the month — see below.
The four weeks
| Week | Good for us | Big-swell days | Mean swell | Mean period |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| April 4–11, 2027 | 61% | 0% | 4.0 ft | 11.2 s |
| April 11–18, 2027 | 43% | 21% | 4.7 ft | 11.3 s |
| May 16–23, 2027 | 64% | 7% | 4.7 ft | 12.3 s |
| May 23–30, 2027 | 50% | 21% | 5.3 ft | 12.5 s |
April 4–11, 2027 is the gentlest: the smallest average swell, and 0% of days over about 6 ft on those dates in the record. Four years of record, so 28 days behind each row — a lean, not a promise. Nobody can promise specific waves. Tell Falyn which weeks work for you.
What to pack for
Apr
30.3 °C water
Air 29/27 °C · 275 mm rain
May
30.5 °C water
Air 30/27 °C · 241 mm rain
Leave the wetsuit at home.
Swimwear, a rash vest or surf leggings for sun, and reef booties if you like them. The water is around 30 °C and the air barely moves off 27–29 °C day or night. It is the tropics on the equator, so it rains — usually in short, heavy bursts rather than whole grey days — and the sun is fierce between them. Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat for the boat, and something light for the evenings.
ERA5 reanalysis and Open-Meteo wave archive at −0.10, 98.05 · 2021–2025 · 1,551 days
The score peaks at about 1 m of swell and is worth nothing by 1.9 m, and weighs light wind more than wind direction, because the boat can reach the sheltered side of the islands. It is a global wave model sampled offshore, so it cannot see how each reef bends the swell — read it as month-to-month shape, not gospel.
